Como muchos de los que nos dedicamos a los asuntos de la creación visual, empecé desde muy niño a mostrar interés por las imágenes y los diversos significados de éstas. La creación de imágenes ha sido la actividad más permanente a lo largo de mi vida, siendo las excusas para realizarla muy diversas según la variación y evolución de mis intereses.
Decidí ser pintor durante mi último año de secundaria y ese mismo año —y el posterior a éste— tomé mis primeras clases formales de dibujo de figura humana y retrato en el Museo de Arte de Lima, una experiencia realmente significativa. Estudié luego por cinco años en la facultad de arte de Pasadena City College en California, de donde me gradué en el 2006. Aprendí a pintar en base a mis propias investigaciones sobre los métodos y materiales de los grandes maestros, bajo la supervisión de mis profesores de pintura, quienes aceptaron mi particular interés y accedieron a evaluarme según el mismo, siendo la enseñanza regular un tanto diferente. Así, entre varios libros, artículos en línea y sobretodo visitas a los museos de arte locales, experimenté con las diversas técnicas y materiales de diferentes pintores clásicos, aplicándolas según veía conveniente a mis pinturas. Mi intención fue siempre desarrollar las habilidades y herramientas que me permitieran tener la libertad de pintar cualquier cosa que se me ocurriera de una manera interesante y atractiva para mí mismo, apuntando a conseguir el grado deseado de expresión.
La figura humana ha estado siempre presente durante toda mi producción pictórica. Fue justamente mi interés en representar la piel de una manera no sólo convincente sino también interesante, lo que me llevó por el camino de la pintura tradicional, y hasta el día de hoy sigo tratando de hacerlo cada vez mejor. Considero mi interés por la figura humana un asunto simple de definir, teniendo en cuenta la auto-identificación que implica representar la imagen de un ser de mi misma especie y las diversas situaciones emocionales en las éste que puede verse envuelto. A esto le sumo mis intereses estéticos y mi predilección por las formas del cuerpo humano como una base con enorme potencial expresivo.
De esta manera sigo desarrollando mi pintura, quizás con temas y conceptos que han ido cambiando y evolucionando a través del tiempo, pero siempre con el mismo ímpetu, el compromiso y la sinceridad del principio.
¿Artista o Pintor?
Puesto brevemente: en una realidad cultural y artística en la que los rezagos del posmodernismo se sienten aún con fuerza y en la cual el arte puede ser literalmente cualquier cosa —por no citar algún ejemplo escatológico— prefiero referirme en la medida de lo posible a mí mismo como pintor y a lo que hago, como pintura. En este contexto actual, no creo ni siento reunir las características de un artista. Así que seré un pintor hasta el día en que el Arte en sí recupere los valores que por siglos lo han caracterizado y que aún en nuestros tiempos siguen siendo válidos.

BIO
Like most of those who are involved in the matters of visual creation, I started to show eager interest in images and their various meanings at a very young age. The creation of images has been the most permanent activity throughout my life, the motivations for doing it being various, according to my ever changing or evolving interests.
I decided to become a painter during my last year of high school and that same year —as well as the one after that— I took my first formal portrait and figure drawing classes at the Museum of Art of Lima, a very significant experience. I then studied fine arts for five years at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California, from where I graduated in 2006. I learned how to paint doing my own research on the methods and materials of the old masters, working under the supervision of my painting teachers, who supported my particular interest and agreed to evaluate my work according to it, the official curricula being somewhat different. So, among various books, online articles, and especially visits to art museums, I learned about and experimented with the various techniques and materials of a few classic painters, applying them to my paintings as I saw fitting. My intention has always been to develop the skills and tools that will give me the freedom to paint anything I could have in mind in an interesting and attractive way, aiming to obtain the desired degree of expression.
The human figure has always been present during my all my pictorial production. It was my interest in depicting flesh —not only in a convincing but also in an interesting way— which drew me towards traditional painting methods and until this day I am still working on doing it better each time. I consider my interest in the human figure a simple matter to define, since depicting a being of my own species and the various emotional situations it can be involved in, carries a great deal of self-identification. Added to this are my aesthetic interests and my predilection for the human forms as a base for great expressive potential.
In this way I continue developing my painting. My themes and concepts might have changed and evolved over the years but I keep the same enthusiasm, compromise and sincerity of the beginning.
¿Artist or Painter?
Simply and briefly put: in a cultural reality in which the last waves of post-modernism are still strongly felt and in which art could be considered literally anything —not to mention any scatological examples— I prefer to refer to myself as a painter and to what I do, as painting. In this current context, I don't think or feel that I have the qualities of an artist. So, I will be a painter until the day in which Art itself recovers the values that for centuries have characterized it and which even in our days continue to be valid.
